PERIDOT - BIRTHSTONES FOR AUGUST

The birthstone for August, Peridot is also the suggested gemstone gift for the sixteenth wedding anniversary. The history of Peridot goes back thousands of years when the ancient Egyptians prized it. It is so ancient that it can be found in Egyptian jewellery from the early 2nd millennium B.C. The ancient Romans too were fond of this gemstone and esteemed its radiant green shine, which does not change even in artificial light. They nicknamed it 'emerald of the evening'. The rich green colour with the slight tinge of gold is caused by very fine traces of iron. The colour it self can vary over all shades of yellowish green and olive, and even a brownish green. Peridot cat's eye and star Peridot are particularly rare and precious. Much of today's Peridot comes from Arizona. Stones from East Burma, now known as Myanmar, have a vivid light green colour with fine inclusions with a silky shine to them. The most beautiful stones come from the border area between Pakistan and Afghanistan. Peridot is readily available in most sizes and a variety of shapes. Peridot has been credited with a host of magical powers and healing properties, such as protection against nightmares and possessing the power to ward off evil!
